Anything potentially dangerous or damaging for your pet can be considered a toxin. Exposure to such substances can be harmful to your pet. Of course, it will be a cause for worry and stress for you too, as you watch your pet deal with it. So, are there any home remedies to deal with pet toxicity? Thankfully, yes, there are many things you can do to ensure that your pet deals with the toxins safely.
The first and foremost thing to do will be to notify your veterinarian. The quicker you get the right help, the better it is for your pet. Your vet will be able to advise and help appropriately and this will certainly improve the chances of your pet’s survival. Make sure you let the vet or emergency personnel know about the chemical or toxin that your pet was exposed to (if you have that information). Once that is done, here is what you can do.
- Rinse your pet: Certain indoor plants are potentially dangerous to pets. If you are aware that your pet has been exposed to such plants, then make sure you rinse or bathe them immediately. Makes sure you rinse thoroughly so that any toxins, pollen, or allergens that may be on the body of your pet may be removed. Whether it takes care of the problem or not, it may bring down the severity of the problem.
- Carry a sample: If you are aware of the chemical or toxin that the pet may have ingested, make sure you carry a sample of the same to the vet. This will not just help in identifying and administering the right treatment, it may save the life of your pet.
- Induce vomiting: Sometimes, the best treatment for a poison that your pet may have ingested is to induce vomiting. However, this must be suggested by your vet based on whatever the pet has ingested. Generally, saltwater, diluted hydrogen peroxide, and/or Ipecac is used to induce vomiting. The right process will be explained to you by your vet. However, it is important to only induce vomiting if your vet suggests. It may be dangerous under certain circumstances.
- Give a pet activated charcoal: Certain poisons or toxins may cause lung infections or other complications. For instance, paint thinner or products containing petroleum byproducts cause lung infections, and in such cases, it is dangerous to induce vomiting. One of the best home remedies to deal with pet toxicity is to give a pet activated charcoal. Endosorb (as suggested by the vet) is a pet activated charcoal that takes care of the toxin by absorbing it as it moves through the stomach and intestines. The charcoal is available in tablet and liquid form too. This makes it easy to administer. Apart from this, your pet may need to be given IV fluids.
